Get. Beat.

I've been watching a few videos of Enigma past, and this is the year. This year is time. With a full roster the past two years, it's time to kick it up a notch.

From the past couple years, we have honed a few aspects of our game. But I am not sure that we have evolved yet.

We also have a terrible tendency of highlighting our best games, which unfortunately are not displaying the caliber of ultimate we need to be playing.

Want it more than the next guy. You are ignorant if you don't think other club teams are utilizing this "off season" for club playing with college teams, conditioning, or traveling to the AUDL combines. Here are a few of the clips from when the battery wasn't dead at Swill in the Ville:

Do what you can in this off season to both mentally and physically prepare yourself for a stellar club season. I've said before I've hit my economies of scale when it comes to ultimate. Fuck that. I just wasn't mentally prepared to take time to rest and recover, then get back to training. That time is now. Make it yours too.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://enigmaultimate.blogspot.com/2011/11/dont-get-beat.html' title='Don't. The 6 teams seeded above Enigma (in order) were Madcow, Evil, Lake Effect, Hustle, Jurassic Shark, and Super Phun Thyme. With the 7th seed going into the tournament, Enigma's pool turned out to be Evil, Enigma, Potbelly (mostly masters team from Columbus), and Breaker's Mark. On Saturday we did what we were supposed to do. We beat both Potbelly and Breaker's Mark and lost to Evil.

Against Evil, Enigma went down 3 breaks early, but with the leadership, experience, and intensity of a hungry D-line led by Weyers, Enigma fought back to earn the breaks back and then trade O points. The two teams enjoyed a huck fest and few mistakes until the score was 10-10 and Evil pulled away with 5 breaks to end the game.

By holding seed, Enigma was set up in a way that if we won 2 games on Sunday, we would advance to Regionals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the first weekend of October. This has been on everyone's mind throughout the entire summer, and Sunday of Sectionals was time to show it.

Game 1: Madador.
Enigma came out fired up against Madcow's reserve squad! Smooth handling, sharp cuts, and Dilworth's layout D's set Enigma up with a 5 point lead at half time. Madador was not put out tho, as they fought back with multiple breaks at the end of the game to bring the game within 3 points (14 - 11 in favor of Enigma). Phil Brodrick, the "Voice of the Generation" looked around, provided a motivational word or two, and Enigma worked in down to score and take the game 15-11. Half of what we needed for the day was complete, but games were only going to get more difficult.

Game 2: Hustle.
Enigma and Hustle met for the first time approximately a month before Sectionals at Nati '11 with Hustle taking the "W" 15-9. With a slightly bitter taste left in our mouths, Enigma was poised to yield different results this time around. Anderson vs. Giese. Weyers vs. Biz. Fudge vs. Bayer. This game was intense. Enigma pulled to start and ended up taking half up one break with the score 8-7. But right out of the half, an errant pass was D'd by Hustle to tie the game right back up. As the wind picked up and rain seemed imminent, handle movement and inside cuts were crucial for both teams. Enigma's D line was able to force turns and capitalize on the change of possession to put Enigma up 13-11. With Hustle pulling and the game being capped at 14, possession was everything. Mike, Phil, and Fudge worked the disc up thru inside cuts, quick breaks, and perfect hands. A steady goal line toss to T Knight caused an eruption on the Enigma sideline! We we're going to Regionals! But the games weren't over yet. Jurassic Shark, the 5th place overall seed just upset Lake Effect to play in the 3rd/4th place game.

Game 3: Jurassic Shark.
For almost the entire first half, the Shark game was breezing bye! Hucks from Evan on Shark, puts from Mike and Phil on Enigma were making this game fly! At 7-7, lightening was spotted as Shark was about to pull... 50 minutes and a few snacks later, we were back on the field. Enigma puts it in to take half 8-7 and after the delay we have a pretty short half time story. I apologize as the next 7 or 8 points are slightly hazy as Mr. Kaylor provided Cheez-It's and my priorities went there... But needless to say we come to an odd predicament. Enigma is up 15-14 and scores! Up by 2, games capped at 16, it must be over right? Again, apparently not. I really don't know the details of why we played the next point, but we did. After working the disc, Shark throw upline to Weyer's man. Biiiiiig mistake. A gorgeous eye-level layout propels Captain Airforce thru a monster layout D! 2 or 3 swings later, Enigma puts the disc in the end zone for the game! 17-14... and long story short after a few e-mails to observers and ultimate officials, the game should have been done at 16-14.

Game 4: Evil.
We were reaaaaally tired. They reaaaaally wanted to win. They did. 15-3 Evil.

Hammer of Thor: was split in 2 and unanimously awarded to Weyers and Dilworth for the continued layout D's and exceptional offense after getting said D's.

Gumball: Mark Anderson for relentless cutting and on the flip side intense D in the event of a turn.

I hope that made sense, I crossed back and forth between "Enigma" and "we" quite often. So I would appreciate it if this doesn't reach my 9th grade literature teacher... Anyways, if you weren't there to reap the glory with us, we got 3rd overall and I hope this helps your enjoyment levels.

Swille in the Ville

This weekend Enigma not only showed up to Swill in the Ville, hosted by LouEvil; but we took away two items. One: a tie for a third place finish overall at the tournament. Two: a first place showing at the tournament party. How did this happen you ask? Well the voice of the generation (Phil for those of you less familiar) posed a simple question to Fudge.

Phil: "Do we win the party if it means a possible poor morning showing?" [more or less direct quote]
Fudge: *Raises Beer Mug*
Team: "CHEEEERS!"

And the party was as good as won. If you care for more intimate details I would highly recommend asking Michael about his facebook wall or Captain Crunch about his female literal enigma (a puzzling or inexplicable occurrence or situation).

W 13 vs. Poppycock Love 8

W 13 vs. Midnight Meat Train B 7

W 10 vs. Voodoo (SO) 8

W 12 vs. Black Flag 2

W 15 vs. Beachfront Property 11

L 5 vs. 15 Dire Wolf

We brought 21 players to Swille in the Ville, and are still getting acclimated O and D lines, but it is working wonders! We went 4-0 day 1 which set us up to play Beachfront Property first game on day 2. After a 4-12 loss to Beachfront Property at Scinny just weeks ago, Enigma came out prepared with a commanding offense and a defense poised for breaks, one of which was a near callahan from your favorite Captain Crunch.

Players of Enigma, keep one word in mind: Sectionals. We have 7 weeks until Sectionals. We have 7 weeks until one tournament that dictates our entire season. I just wrapped up a 5 mile run. I'm sure Mike pumped iron at the gym. I know Phil destroyed the rule book after this weekend. Enigma's 4th season has been through the pickup portion, and today was the first day of practice. As far as numbers go, we were just under 20 guys ranging from 4th year Enigma Veterans to Rookies.

Enigma prides themselves both on competitive sport as well as spirit of the game, and this mind set will be carried on through the 2011 club season. In addition to competing in the Club Series, Enigma is looking to grow the sport of Ultimate in the premier location of Dayton, OH. Surrounded by Cincinnati and Columbus, Dayton natives are forced to travel for summer leagues, high schoolers have no elders to look up to, and ultimate is really only focused in on at the College Level. This year, Enigma will be a competitive team, that turns no one away if the desire and passion to play ultimate is there.

Here is the tournament schedule, I was going to write something about smart cutting and field vision, but I found it's slightly complicated when all I want to do is sleep. I'll have to return to that...

Tournament Schedule:

6/24-6/25 - Scinny in Cincinnati, OH
7/9-7/10 - Hoosier Hodown in Bloomington, IN
7/23-7/24 - Swille in the Ville in Louisville, KY
8/6-8/7 - Kentucky Classic in Louisville, KY
8/20-8/21 - Cooler Classic in Milwaukee, WI
8/27-8/28 - Nati Open in Cincinnati
Sectionals
Regionals

2011 Club

Practice Schedule

Tuesdays 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Thursdays 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Saturdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (TENTATIVE)

Check us on FFindr!

Check us on USAU!

This season looks very promising with a bunch of young and new interest coming to Enigma. Nati Open. This year it was a one day tournament with only 5 teams: Enigma, Lake Effect, Cinci Open, Breakers Mark, and Age Against the Machine. I feel like cutting to the chase, so here are the scores:

Enigma 13 over Age 4
Enigma 13 over Cinci Open 4
Engima 13 over Breakers Mark 7
Enigma over Lake Effect 7

We had 2 subs for most of the day until the last game when we had a lonely sub the entire game. Playing near savage for 4 games was a good experience and for everyone that was there I'm sure we all have much more confidence going into sectionals here in less than a month.

Enigmen, continue running and throwing as much as you can here in the next month. Sectionals is going to be a blast, and Regionals needs to be in more than the back of your mind at this point.

His name was Pegasus....

The video from the Age scrimmage is uploading right now, so I'll post a link when it's done.

Practice comes to an end

I have been informed that it has been a while since the blog has been updated, so here it goes. (Hoy, for you I almost stopped there) But for everyone else, practice has come to a conclusion for the season ending with a 2 game scrimmage in Cinci against Age Against the Machine. Enigma brought sublimated jerseys and hucks a plenty, but our man defense left much to be desired. Fellas, bring it upon yourselves to condition in this month before sectionals we have. Everyone get as fit and as tan as Butters, then a Regionals appearance including a Hoover hosting will be all but guaranteed.

Oh, and there may have been a small amount of footage accumulated through these tournaments this summer, so with Ames breathing down my neck I will begin putting together a little highlight reel to show how good you guys are and how many turns I have.

Video will be up in 6 months at the latest.

1st Tourney Victory

Sorry gentlemen, it has been a while. But it is time to expand on the limited blogging that has happened in the near past. Enigma has been to No Surf, Scinny, and now the Bourbon Bowl tournament. The "latterest" of these tourneys, Enigma got stuck in traffic on I-75 and arrived 15 minutes late to the fields: promptly cleating up, lacking warm ups, and lost our 2 first games by approximately 7 points total if I remember correctly.

Enigma 9 vs. Lex Lutheran Alum 13
Enigma 10 vs. Silver Bullet Band 13

The next game was enjoyable, for there was an opponent. Approximately the height of myself (fudge). Wearing matching cleats. Matching shorts. Hat and manorisms were also strikingly similar and quickly became known as "skinny me" from the perspective of our similar opponent. Enigma managed to pull out a 13 - 9 victory that sent precedent for the remainder of the tournament.

With motivation of free beer and a hotel stay, Enigma won their next game 13 - 2 with 0* turnovers (which was the deed to be done for said beers and hotels).

On day 2 Enigma. Didn't. Mess. Around. Game 1 was against Breaker's Mark and Enigma took the game at 13 - 4. Next came the looong bye round for Enigma as Silver Bullet Band and Breakers Mark were hard capped in a game to 13. For all of you that recall, we chose fantasy players and "Socks" was the victor with 2.5 fantasy points. And a glorious bye it was. But a bitter taste was left in the Enigmatic mouths from the day before. It was time for revenge.

Enigma (3 seed) played the 2nd seed Silver Bullet Band and Enigma took the game 13 - 2. After playing a total of 56 points in the first 2 games on day 2, Silver Bullet Band's zone could not contain the Enigmen. So the finals rolled around, and Enigma was to play Lex Lutheran Alum again. Although this game we had the injured side line support of Dungeon-Master Baumann. That must have been what we needed (plus the extra wrist band he provided), for Enimga went on to win 13 - 10 to pull out the first tournament victory in the premier Dayton club team's history.

GUMBALL WINNER: Chris Weyers for spectacular layout D's and never ending intensity on the field.

*Fudge and Weyers were paying for the beer and hotel, so their turns were not counted (3 total)

Practice Starts Tomorrow

Just in case you haven't heard and you happen to look here, Enigma practices (pickup) will begin tomorrow, Tuesday the 11th at 6pm at our usual practice location off Stewart and Main St. near UD's campus. I have this burning passion to hear anything ultimate related, because I haven't been able to compete in a tournament yet this fall. (stupid ankles, whatevs). But anways, if any Enigmen have had any exceptional plays, make a comment or tell me and I'll try to make it as exciting as possible with words as ultimate can get.

What do we have that I have heard of thus far:

OU and that gigantic freshman kid stomping some teams

OSU split squads are keeping the Enigma super secret plays just that. Oh yea, and apparently when J Baumann is on the side lines on feel-better-shoulder-drugs, he can be quite the comic

WSU is kicking it into higher gears on the field

Miami has cocky sophomores sending me texts about how good they are

I miss WashU players on the field. And by players I mean player

I haven't heard much from UD, someone spread the word

So if you have any sweet ultimate stories, or would like everyone to pop a squat and tell a half-time story about Scotty peeing on something he owns... Feel free to share.

Ahhhh, that was a successful "lunch" break. Also, I have a teensy amount of footage (excluding all our great plays of course) so I'll be putting together another little video if it appears to be good enough. Anyways, here are the Sectionals results...

Day One:

W 17 - 8 Silver Bullet Band

L 17 - 12 Lake Effect

W 15 - 10 Ohio University

Day Two:

L 10 - 15 Kenobie

W 16 - 15 Joyce

L 13 - 14 Ohio University*

* UPA score reporter says something like 15 - 10 and that is bogus

So for those of you that weren't there, here is a brief recap. Enigma opened strong against Silver Bullet Band putting an emphasis on the game to come: Lake Effect. Against Silver Bullet Band, the fellows of Enigma capitalized on many turns and getting a few of their own. With the past experiences with Lake Effect, there was a great deal of anticipation for this game with both teams wanting to prove their place in the section.

Lake Effect came out well prepared on offense as well as on defense getting some crucial D's late in the game to seal their victory. The final game of day one was against OU who came out quick with a strong zone to stun Enigma early. But after taking that first deep breath, Enigma took a step back and proceeded to shred the college zone the way club teams love to do so much.

Day two began with a loss to "Russ in Tights," I'm sorry, I mean Kenobie. We played a good game but it was taken when "Russ in Tights" caught some hammer swill. Then came probably the most intense game of the weekend. Joyce. With the Baumanns playing for OSU and myself picking up Joyce at CHC, the desire for these 2 premier teams to prove their worth was quite obvious.

(I know this is beginning to be a little less brief then originally planned in case you were wondering) Enigma fought Joyce tooth and claw, trading upwind points, getting breaks, then Joyce answering right back. With a few layout D's from Mike Ames and a spectacular layout grab in the endzone from Scotty, Enigma closed the game 16 - 14. Then we lost to OU. Boo.

Video from The Rock

Finally got this put together so I don't want to talk your ear off. We still have just over a month to be in the best shape of our lives to tear the East. Plains. Up! I have Sectionals on my mind, because everyday since I moved to Findlay I have been running... and here is a bit of my mentality:

Whenever I head out on a run, I envision how this particular run is going to help me at Sectionals. Every time I think about slowing down, I think about playing D against Robotik or some other team we go head - to - head with. My man is cutting in, and I have been all over him the entire game. It doesn't matter that he's been busting ass and I'm wiped out, he does NOT get that disc. Everything I have is left on the field, and that is how you have to condition. If you think about slowing down on a run, pick up the pace, let the adrenaline flow and know you are going to smoke some guys in a couple weeks.

If you are lifting, doing plyos, or just tossing with a friend, throw the way you would in a game. Get snap on those throws! Practice low releases while throwing away from your body. Just keep this in the back of your mind: everything that are you doing, you are doing for a purpose.

Don't come to practice and pussyfoot around. Come out and play the way you would in game! Get pumped! Act crazy like Fudge during bid drill! Whatever it takes, get the mental portion of your game down.

Much love from Findaly,
Fudge'ems

Ps, consider yourselves lucky. There are people in Dayton that play ultimate. Findlay has a pre-teen girl soccer league.

Oh yea, I also forgot this post was about more than conditioning.... Sectionals info should be coming out soon. So far 14 teams have registered, but a few more still need to. I'll update the ole blog when our seed/pool is up.

[THE ROCK]

So apparently the gentlemen of Enigma are quite photogenic, and attract quite the camera crew while tearing up the field in Rockford, Illinois this past weekend at The Rock. This video was on the news, and is now up online here. I have also joined the twitter craze, and Enigma tournament updates will be one of my "tweet topics" if you will. Check those out here.

All right, enough with the foreplay... Those photogenic gentlemen of Enigma came out absolutely blazing day one! Game one was against Gnarwhal, the 1 seed in our pool and the 2 seed overall. Windy conditions and few turnovers graced Enigma with a solid 15 - 5 upset. The scores improved for our opponents throughout the day, each team scoring one more than the prior.

Day 1 Results:

W Gnarwhal 15 - 5

W FC Champaign 15 -6

W Cornography 15 - 7

W Risky Bidness 15 - 8

Day 2 Results:

W Salvage 15 - 5

L Beachfront Property 6 - 15

Sorry to spoil the end of the weekend with those scores already, but day 2 started with a slow victory over Salvage (seen twice at Hoosier Hoedown). Without the intensity of upsetting the 2 seed going into the next game, Beachfront Property handed Enigma their first loss of the tournament, but the green column was filled enough to satisfy most. Again, there are going to be a lot of good teams there, so we need to make sure that we are ready.

Few things to consider during practice these next couple weeks:

If you guys get an opportunity outside of practice, try to get some running in. Any extra conditioning we get in before The Rock and Sectionals will give us that extra edge on those universe points we get stuck on so very often.

Abdominal workouts! Planks, crunches, etc... Get it done!

For that extra vertical, get some calf raises in fellas! Just so everyone knows, there is quite the heated competition for the gumball award this week. Currently our front runners for this prestigious award include Alan "Butters" Smith and Maximillian Streeter. What did these two have to say about this you may ask? Well Maximillian was unavailable for an interview, while Butters just looked at the camera with a stunning smile.

Day One Results:
W 15 - 6 Ohio University
L 12 -1 4 Robotik
L 6 - 15 LouEvil
W 15 - 4 The LeBrons

Day Two Results:

W 14 - 12 Silver Bullet

L 10 - 15 Indy Ruckus

Well, day one started off well. Enigma rolled a short handed Ohio alumni team as a good warmup for a tough fought game against Robotik (very much Hoosiermamma). Robotik took half 8-4, but Eingma played touch man D, and brought the game to 12's. After very long points, Robotik pulled away and and snagged a 12-14 victory over Enigma. LouEvil was the next game we had. They played well. 6 - 15 LouEvil. That is all. Enigma closed out day one playing Cleveland with a few players from No Surf. But with 2 losses on our minds from today, and two from Cleveland at No Surf, Enigma took a stand and won 15 - 4. (With the help of some young and inexperienced Cleveland players)

This picture is what Enigma is all about

Bring it in guys, and no table topping!

Throw low!

Great playing overall this weekend and congrats to Max on winning the gumball for not only his performance on the field, but for devouring the entire Wendy's value meal. Another congratulations is due to Great Lakes member, Will Neff of Michigan for receiving the Callahan Award. Neff came through against Black Tide to lead Michigan to a quarter finals appearance against Colorado. Although Neff and Michigan gave the Mamabirds a run for their money, Colorado pulled through in the end. I took some video and here are a few samples that should give some insight... There will be a compiled highlight reel from Nats as soon as I get it all put together. Until then, I hope this satisfies your thirst for some ultimate footage

This briefly shows one of Colorado's styles of warming up their hands before a big game. Maybe they are onto something. They don't the Black Tide's style of "spray" that our very own Addison is so fond of, but this seems to work slightly more effectively. When watching these videos may I suggest following the video title link to Vimeo to be able to view the clips in HD. Although the Texas guy had somewhat of a stumble, there is no way Wisconsin was going to let the disc get to him. Texas ended up winning the game though, 13 -12 over the Hodags.I hope you enjoyed these little clips and that they also get you pumped up. It's Memorial Day, but practice is still from 6-8. Another national competition being held in Columbus is a great opportunity for you to see how to throw that break mark just a little better, or maybe to get the edge on laying out or skying the competition.

The top 20 teams in the nation will be gathered here in Ohio, including Carleton (1), Colorado (2), Wisconsin (3), and Virginia (4). The Great Lakes are being represented by Illinois (8) and Michigan (9), being led by callahan candidate Will Neff. This weekend could lead to some excellent insight onto what Enigma needs to make a fall appearance in Sarasota, FL.
